Classification Blake (2017:94) discusses the validity of Protoariciella. He stated "Given the small size of the various species of Protoariciella (all less than 10 mm) described thus far and the fact that two achaetous peristomial segments are characteristic of larval and postlarval stages of different species of Naineris and Leodamas tribulosus, it seems likely that the five species of Protoariciella are all juveniles of other orbiniids" [Editor's emphasis]. [and] "the genus would be a synonym of either Leodamas or Naineris depending on the placement of the type-species P. uncinata". Blake tentatively included Protoariciella genus in Orbiniinae genera, but later he stated "... [former Microrbiniinae] genera Protoariciella and Orbiniella [...] appear to contain species that display juvenile characters suggesting they may be juveniles of other orbiniids. The discovery of gametes in some of these species indicates that they are sexually mature and likely valid" [details]
Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Hartmann-Schröder (1962: 133-134): "Prostomium gerundet, mit 2 Augen; vordere 2 Segmente ohne Borsten; Kiemen an allen, bis auf wenige vordere Segmente, vorhanden; Notopodien mit einfachen kapillaren Borsten, dazu hinten 1 dicke, acicula-förmige Borste; Neuropodien mit kapillaren Borsten und glatten und gezähnten Haken; Rüssel glatt." Etymology Not stated in the original description. The name of the genus Protoariciella is composed by the name of the genus Protoaricia Czerniavsky, 1881, followed by the Latin suffix -ella (masculine: -ellus), which is added to a noun to form a diminuitive of that noun. It refers presumably to the reduced size and similarity of the new genus with the genus Protoaricia. [details]From other sources
description PROTOARICIINAE with pointed prostomium and branchiae present on all but a few anterior segments ( from setiger 3 in type species). Thoracic notosetae all are crenulated capillaries; acicular setae present in posterior notopodia. Neurosetae include thick hooks with three teeth; slender acicular setae with flat teeth, crenulated capillaries and thick smooth spines in posterior segments. [details]
