Harmful effect Until recently considered to be a producer of azaspiracid, which gives DSP-like symptoms in humans, and a mixture of DSP-and neurotoxin-like effects in mice. The effects are now thought to be caused by Azadinium spinosum. The toxin is transferred from Azadinium to other organisms, including Protoperidinium crassipes, when these organisms feed on Azadinium [details]
