Authority The only interpretation possible of Langerhans' original text is that Langerhans intended Capitella minima to be an instance of Ancistria minima Quatrefages 1866, thus a recombination from Ancistria and not a new species. Langerhans (transl) states "From a fish basket I got 6 specimens of an interesting Capitella, which is probably identical to Ancistria minima Quatrefages." He gives the citation for Quatrefages species in a footnote. At the end of his description he states "If this species agrees with the above, then Quatrefages only specimen was probably a young one". However, subsequent authors have ignored this evidence and treated Langerhans' instance as a new species. As Quatrefages' species is currently a synonym of Heteromastus filiformis, but also regarded as indeterminable (Hutchings & Rainer 1982), it seems best to not disturb the validity of Capitella minima sensu Langerhans which has been subsequently reported and was the basis of genus Capitomastus (see eg Green, 2002) [details] Type locality Madeira (further location unspecified) [details]
