Study of the type species of Cycloloculina and Sherbornina
shows that these two genera can be distinguished
by the presence of a tubular canal system in
the latter and by its absence from the former. Examination
of types and other specimens of the 13 species
previously referred to these two genera indicates that
they can be reduced to two species of Cycloloculina
and five species of Sherbornina. These are shallow,
warm-water foraminifera having a world-wide distribution
and stratigraphic record from upper Paleocene
to mid-Miocene. There is an evolutionary trend from
simple to complex forms.
Populations exhibit considerable morphotypic variation,
with some individuals developing into Plunorbulinella-
like forms, which are thought to be schizogonous
resting stages in the life cycle.
