Taxonomy Laomedea tottoni is an objective synonym of Clytia fragilis Congdon, 1907 by the nomenclatural act of Leloup (1935c). As a name it is unnecessary because the secondary homonymy created by Leloup (1935c) does not exist anymore.Clytia fragilis Congdon, 1907 (and thus also Laomedea tottoni) has been regarded as a synonym of Clytia linearis (e. g. Calder, 1991).
Galea (2010b) thinks that Leloup's (1935c) material named as L. tottoni cannot be referred to C. linearis and should be regarded as a distinct species.
However, the name C. tottoni cannot be applied to this material, as C. tottoni is a synonym of C. linearis. There is no need to propose a new species name for the material of Leloup (1935c) as it matches Clytia laxa Fraser, 1937 and it should be referred to this species. [details]
