Mouth large with the lower jaw jutted. Gill openings wide. Scales ctenoid. First dorsal fin with 6-9 spines; 11-14 soft rays in second dorsal fin. Anal fin soft rays 11-14. Pelvic fins widely set apart. A single spine in pelvic fin; soft rays 5. No free rays on pectoral fin. Swim bladder lacking. Vertebrae 27.  [details]
