Diagnosis "Ce genre, pour lequel nous proposerons le nom de Torrea, se distingue des Alciopes par les pieds qui ne portent que deux lobes foliacés, l'un en dessus, l'autre en dessous du tubercule sétigère." (Quatrefages, 1850: 34). [details]
Etymology The generic name Torrea seems to make reference to the type locality of Torrea vitrea Quatrefages, 1850, the type of the genus, collected around Torre dell'Isola ("environs de la Torre dell'Isola"; Quatrefages, 1850: 34), in the northern coast of Sicily (Italy, Mediterranean Sea). [details]
Type species The type species of the genus Torrea Quatrefages, 1850 is referred to be Alciopa candida delle Chiaje, 1828 by authors such as Hartman (1959: 171), Day (1967: 186) or Fauchald (1977: 52), which is erroneous. The correct type species is Torrea vitrea Quatrefages, 1850, as stated in Støp-Bowitz (1948: 22; 1992: 37), having been designated by monotypy. [details]
