Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Reibisch (1893: 252) in a key: "B. In die Rüsselwand sind zahlreiche kleine Drüsen eingelagert. Tentakelcirren vier bis sechs. Die zugehörigen Chaetopodien stets vorhanden. 1) Tentakelcirren sechs, vier dorsale, zwei ventrale. [...] b. Die den vorderen vier Tentakelcirren zugehörigen Chaetopodien mit kurzen einfachen Borsten. Dorsal- und Ventralcirren flach walzenförmig.'' [details]
Etymology The name of the genus is composed by the Greek words αλς ('háls'), meaning 'sea', and πλανης ('plánēs'), meaning 'wanderer' or 'roamer', and refers presumably to the pelagic condition of the taxon. [details]
