Etymology Not stated, but H. bulbosus is evidently named for the bulbous (Latin bulbosus -a –um) dorsal verticil spine. [details]
Spelling The spelling 'bulbosus' was correct in 1990, but an ICZN code change in 1999 made Hydroides feminine, thus 'bulbosa' is required. [details]
Type locality Khor Ghubb ’Ali, Musandam Peninsula, Oman, Strait of Hormuz, in a sheltered bay at 18 m, 26.2633° 56.3572° (map estimate)
