Etymology "The specific name refers to the shelf which is developed across the dorsum of segment 3 and is from the Latin" (Hutchings & Smith, 1997: 341). [details]
Habitat In sandy or shelly tubes in protected channels of the exposed rocky shore, or among well-embedded rocks, at intertidal level. [details]
Type locality Mathesons Bay, near Leigh, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand (36°18.5'S, 174°48.2'E; provided geocoordinates slightly displaced, corrected here to -36.3028°, 174.7974°). [details]
