Grammatical gender Scolopes is apparently a plural term (Sollas, 1888: 432, footnote) of the Greek word scolops, meaning a palisade. According to the ICZN (art. 30.1.4.3) genus names ending in -ops are to be treated as masculine. The plural term, however, has no gender, and the type species name does not provide a clue. Our decision to cosider the genus name faminine is thus arbitrary. [details]
