Taxonomy Blake & Maciolek (1992) redescribed Scolecolepides carunculatus Maciolek, 1984, stating that the species did not agree with the definition of the genus Scolecolepides. With base on the structure of the hooded hooks, nature of the prostomium and caruncle, and reduced nature of chaetiger 1, and despite the lack of ventral branchiae and modified anterior notochaetae, the species was included in the newly described genus Lindaspio Blake & Maciolek, 1992. Bellan et al. (2003) considered that the inclusion of Scolecolepides carunculatus in the genus Lindaspio was problematic, as it did not possess two to four chaetigers with notopodial clusters of heavy spines in the anterior region, nor neuropodial branchiae, and performed a phylogenetic analysis of the two genera. The results of this analysis discarded Scolecolepides carunculatus from Lindaspio, but also from the genus Scolecolepides. According to the same authors, the species belongs probably to a different and potential new genus, but due to the lack of autapomorphies, it is dificult to define such genus. For the moment being the species remains in the genus where it was originally described. [details]
