The inhalant orifices of the sponges aquiferous system can in some species,
joïn up and make stable inhalant structures. The study, in 6 species, of the sieve,
example of such a structure, shows that it is an ectosomic differentiation produced
by a modification of the cellular topography relating not only to the superficial
inhalant area but also the underlying cavity.
The inhalant sieved lamina shows an organisation in three characteristic zones: an upper zone is essentially constituted by an exopinacocyte layer, a middle zone with contractile spindle-shaped cells forming sphincter, an inner zone is involvjng archeocytes, globiferous cells, vacuoles-cells and limited by prosopinacocytes.
The wall of the vestibule is made interlocking of the sieved lamina by a sphincter which is in continuily with the one of the lamina. A spicule-stratum limits the whole which is perfectly individualised in the ectosome. The "inhalant organ" so defined tends to a better control of the water-current.
