Taxonomy Khlebovich (1996) under Leonnates comments that "L. simplex Monro, 1939 I singled out in the new genus Wuinereis, differing from Leonnates by two lobes of notopodia instead of three and well-expressed heterogomph falcigers". Bakken & Wilson (2005) comment that Qiu & Qian (2000), who revised Leonnates, were unaware of Wuinereis, and kept the type species of it in Leonnates. Qiu & Qian note that area VI structures, "originally described as papillae, are scleritized structures, which should be considered as paragnaths. The occurrence of paragnaths on this area has not been reported in any other Leonnates species." [details]

Diagnosis [adjusted machine translation] "Type species Leonnates simplex Monro, 1939 (Monro, 1939: 403, textfig. 305; east coast of Africa, the type is kept in Brit. Mus. Nat. Hist.). Cephalic lobe oval or pyriform. Two antennas. Two-segmented palms. 4 tentacular cirri. Maxillary pharynx ring with chitinous paragnaths, oral with soft papillae. The first two segments single-branched, the rest are two-branched. Notopodia has 2 lobes. Notopodial bristles - homogomous spinigers. In the ventral fascicle there are clearly heterogomphic falcigers with a short bent distal joint. The genus is close to Leonnates and Paraleonnates: it has oral paragnaths and soft papillae. From the first, the absence of a middle lobe in the notopodia differs, and [it has] sharply heterogomph falcigers, from the second, the presence of falcigers. Monotypic genus. The genus is named after the Chinese scientist Professor U Baalin (Wu Baoling).
