Taxonomy Lamarck (1822:260) referred to Tonna dolium (Linnaeus, 1758) as Dolium maculatum whilst adding the name Dolium tessellatum to its synonymy rather than using that name for the separate species which he had named 6 years earlier and is currently accepted as Tonna tessellata (Lamarck, 1816). Taxonomy Barnard (1963:6) used the name Tonna tessellata (Lamarck, 1822) as identification of a specimen of Tonna lischkeana (Küster, 1857)
Thach (2005:92) used the name Tonna tessellata (Lamarck, 1822) as identification of a specimen of Tonna allium (Dillwyn, 1817) [details]
