Nomenclature The name Scalaria commutata Monterosato, 1877 is understood (Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1882-1886; Landau et al., 2006) as a replacement name for Scalaria lamellosa Lamarck, 1822, non (Brocchi, 1814), an interpretation which is supported by the name itself. This makes the replaced name permanently invalid (ICZN Art. 59). If this view is followed, the specimens in the Monterosato collection are not type material (contrary to the view expresed by Appolloni et al. (2018) that Scalaria commutata "regarding the introduction by Monterosato (1877: 420) as a new species") and the type locality of commutata is the same as that of lamellosa i.e.in the Caribbean. Would the eastern and western Atlantic be regarded as not conspecific, there is thus no available name with a Mediterranean or Eastern Atlantic type locality. . [details]
