Authority Authority corrected to Ehlers (1901). Rouse & Pleijel (2001:84) pointed out that Southern (1914) is not the author, contrary to the wide modern usage derived from the Hartman catalogue (1959:124) and repeated in the Fauchald 1977 guide. Southern himself had stated that Levinsen (1887) had created the family name, but this is not correct either. However, widely used monographs by Fauvel (1923), Hartman (1939), and Day (1967), and the Australian "Polychaetes & Allies" overview by Hutchings also incorrectly named Levinsen as the family author.A serious further confusion is created by Gonzalez et al (2018) where several mentions state that Grube is the author of Pisionidae. He is not. First they state that Rouse & Pleijel (2001) and Fauchald (1977) have Grube as the author of Pisionidae (those authors do not have Grube as the author), then (p.227) state that ‘Pisionidae’ was first described by Grube (1857). The latter mention is actually simply to Grube's new genus Pisione, placed by Grube in the Phyllodocidae. [details]
Classification Subfamily status as Pisioninae. Molecular reports on the position of Pisione and Pisionidae in 2012 and 2017 simply stated that Pisionidae is a synonym of Sigalionidae. There was no suggestion that the name be maintained as a subfamily in Sigalionidae, although this might be convenient. Later Gonzalez et al (2018: 245) formally re-ranked Pisionidae as Pisioninae in Sigalionidae. Those authors also stated the name Pisionidae was (still) a synonym of Sigalionidae (p.244), but this is not now correct subsequent to the rank change. Changes in family-level rank are not synonymies, as the original name continues as valid, with rank change indicated by the change in suffix. Elsewhere in the same work Gonzalez et al (2018: 245) state that Pisionidae is "Pisionidae nom. supp.", but this is also incorrect (and bizarre). Only the ICZN can suppress a name, and Pisionidae continues with merely changed rank to Pisioninae. Any taxonomist can later treat Pisionidae as a full family again if they think that is justified. Editor's comment As well as Pisione, the other minor genera apparently belonging in Pisionidae (Anoplopisione, Fauveliella (synonym of Pisionidens?), Pisionella Hartman, Pisionella Aiyar & Alikunhi [homonym], Genera Praegeria (synonym of Pisione), Pisionidens, and Sylloides) were moved to Sigalionidae in 2012 to follow the family-level synonymy proposed by Norlinder et al (2012). Caveat: Norlinder et al's 2012 examination was restricted to characters of Pisione and Pisionidens. Subsequently Gonzalez et al (2018) continued Pisionidae as subfamily Pisioninae in Sigalionidae.
