Editor's comment Cypricercus fuscatus is not found (either as a valid or as an non-valid species) on the most recent checklist of the world's freshwater ostracods (Meisch, Smith & Martens 2019). The original description of Jurine (1820) also does not mention Cypricercus fuscatus, but rather Monoculus fuscatus (latter combined as Bradleystrandesia fuscata). Therefore, we believe Brunel et al (1998) misspelled it when writing the catalogue of the marine invertebrates of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence and we are considering Cypricercus fuscatus as an unaccepted (nomen nudum) species.
