Nomenclature note The name of the phylum Porifera was chosen from a large number of past alternative names for the phylum. Since the names of taxa above the family level are not guided by the Code of the ICZN, the name is dependent on a consensus of workers on the phylum. In the older literature other names may have reached popularity, so a non-exhaustive list is given here (but they are avoided in the WoRMS database with the argument of their status of 'disuse').
