Group description Mosdiertjes zijn vastzittende, kolonievormende dieren die erg variabel van vorm zijn. Ze kunnen dunne korstjes, verhoogde kussens, vlezige lobben of rechtopstaande twijgjes vormen. De individuele diertjes – zoïden genoemd - zijn met een loep zichtbaar. Rond de mond zit een tentakelkrans waarmee ze plankton uit het water filteren (lofofoor). Bij verstoring trekken ze deze krans snel terug. Kolonies van mosdiertjes hechten zich meestal vast aan rotsen, schelpen of andere invertebraten en zelfs zeewieren. Veel soorten zijn te vinden in de Europese zeeën in getijdenzones van rotsige kusten. Voor een correcte determinatie van de verschillende soorten is echter altijd een loep of zelfs een microscoop nodig.
