Alien species Originally the Australasian barnacle Elminius modestus only occurred in Australia and Asia. During the Second World War the species was introduced into Europe by attaching itself to merchant- and warships. In Belgium the species was first reported attached to a ship's hull in 1950. The Australasian barnacle grows fast and is resistant to changing salinity levels, temperatures, and cloudy water. As a result, this is now the most common barnacle along the Belgian coast. [details]
Distribution Is native to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. This species reached Europe between 1940 - 1943 and rapidly spread all over on the European coasts. [details]
Ecology Epizoic species. [details]
