Spelling Ending invariant. Gender agreement (if dianthus was an adjective) would require a mandatory change, However, the botanical generic name Dianthus (flower of Zeus) is neo-Latin (Linnaeus and earlier) from Greek Δηοσ (Dios), genitive of Zeus, and ανθος (anthos) ‘flower’. As Serpula is feminine and dianthus is masculine it seems Verrill intended the name as a noun, thus it is invariant for gender.
