Etymology Not stated, uncertain. The name Notophycus is composed by the combining form of Greek origin noto-, maybe from the Greek word nôton and meaning 'back', or from the Greek word Notos or Notus, designating the god of the South Wind and, by extention, the 'south', and the Greek word phycos, meaning 'seaweed'. It could be a reference to the southern origin of the genus, or to the fact that the type specimens were collected from washings of red algae, on which the specimens lived. Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Knox & Cameron (1970: 75): "With the characters of the family [Notophycidae]." The diagnosis of the family is as follows: "Minute, body short, up to 22 segments. Prostomium with two pairs of eyes, two pairs of lateral antennae and two small ventral palps. Muscular pharynx armed with a pair of jaws. Two pairs of tentacular cirri arising from a distinct segment without setae; segments two and three with uniramous parapodia, the neuropodia only being present; the remaining segments with biramous parapodia.
