Etymology The specific epithet speciosa is the feminine form of the Latin adjective speciosus, meaning 'beautiful' or 'splendid', and probably refers to the colouration of the species, which was described by Izuka (1912: 184) as follows: "Colour of living specimens purplish brown dorsally, with a median longitudinal yellowish patch in each segment, except on anteriormost six segments and the anal segment; on the sixth segment a broad yellowish transverse band; posterior half of penultimate and anal segments lighter coloured. All the tentacles and cirri are milk-white." [details]
Habitat Intertidal tide pool. [details]
Type locality Pacific Ocean, Japan, "In a tide- pool near Misaki in Prov. Sagami, August 17th, 1906" (Izuka, 1912: 184) (geocoordinates not provided, estimated with gazetteer to be approximately lat. 35.1579º, long. 139.6124º). The type material was collected near Misaki Marine Biological Station, which in 1906 already had the same location than today, at Misaki (now part of the town of Miura), in Sagami Province (nowadays central and western Kanagawa Prefecture).
