Etymology Not stated by the author. The generic name is composed by the Latin prefix of Greek origin amphi-, meaning 'on both sides', and the word branchus, for 'branchia', and seems to refer to the presence of two gills on each notopodium that according to Kinberg (1867: 90) characterizes the genus: "Af detta slägte, utmärkt genom tvenne gälar på hvarje ryggfot, känna vi tvenne arter" [= "Of this genus, characterized by two gills on each dorsal foot, we know two species" (translation by the editor)].
