Etymology Not stated. The generic name is composed by the Greek prefix pygo-, meaning 'tail' or 'rump', followed by the name of the genus Ophelia Savigny, 1822, the type of the family, and presumably refers to the anal funnel that would be present in the taxon. [details]
Nomenclature The generic name Pygophelia M. Sars, 1869 is a nomen nudum, as it does not accomplish Article 12 of the ICZN. It appears as a new taxon in a list of taxa provided by M. Sars (1869: 253), without the support of any further taxonomic information. [details]
Taxonomy Eliason (1962: 276-276) suggested that the genus Pygophelia was represented by specimens belonging to the genus Ammotrypane Rathke, 1843 (now Ophelina Örsted, 1843), namely to the new species Ammotrypane sarsi Eliason, 1962. [details]
