Spelling Possibly the first creation of Laetmatonice as a misspelling of Laetmonice is in Baird (1865: 179). Baird presents the name as if Kinberg had spelled the name as 'Laetmatonice'. At that time it was not unknown for 'corrected' spellings to be created, without explanation, when an author thought the original spelling was badly formulated in Latin, but this anarchic practice is misguided at best. McIntosh (1900: 258) also prominently and oddly (without comment) uses the 'Laetmatonice' spelling, although earlier in the 1885 Challenger report McIntosh had used the correct Laetmonice spelling. The Hartman (1959) catalogue dignifies the variant spelling with a separate entry but makes clear it is a misspelling [details]
