Etymology Not expressly stated. The specific epithet eximia is a Latin adjective meaning 'special', 'particular' or 'remarkable', and seems to refers to the many remarkable features of the species, according to its author. "This worm is remarkable for its softness, its blood red color, its numerous extensible tentaculae, and its numerous podal hooks" (Leidy, 1855: 146-147). [details]

Taxonomic remark According to Glasby and Hutchings (2014) the description of this species is inadequate, the original drawings are too small to show specific characters. Glasby and Hutchings (2014) suggest that this species has to be treated as species inquirenda until additional material is available. [details]
