Etymology author: "Named after its characteristic inner tube". No derivation given. 'Tubus' is a masculine Latin noun, spiculus is an adjective for pointed. There is no spiculi- form. [details]
Grammatical gender author's species name 'spiculitubus' appears to be a compound noun in apposition, unchanging for gender agreement [details]
Taxonomy Pillai (2009:125) created a new species name for Australian specimens similar to H. tambalagamensis from Sri Lanka, with similar opercular crown spines, and made lengthy comments on differences between the two. Sun et al (2015:82) place H. spiculitubus into synonymy, reasoning the chitinous spicules forming an inner tube were overlooked in H. tambalagamensis. [details]
