Homonymy Nereis foliata Baird, 1863 is a junior homonym to Nereis foliata Dalyell, 1853 (a synonym of Scolelepis squamata) [details]
Synonymy Moore (1909: 245) tentatively referred Nereis foliata to Alitta brandti which he regarded as a subspecies of A. virens. Earlier Johnson (1901: 398) had regarded both as indistinct from Alitta virens (as Nereis). However, much earlier Ehlers (1868) unequivocally included Nereis foliata as reported by Lord (1866: 347) under Nereis brandti. As Nereis foliata Baird, 1863 is senior to N. brandti this is not possible on priority. However, as N. foliata is an unreplaced homonym, it cannot be used as valid. N. brandti is the next available name (assuming the names indeed represent the same species). [details]
