The present paper describes thirteen genera and twenty five species from the middle and lower reaches of the Sanggan River valley, among which 7 species are recognized as new. Based on the stratigraphical and geographical distribution of fossil ostracodes and the ecology of their living members, this paper also disccusses(sic) the geological age and the depositional environment of the fossil-bearing strata. The lower fossil-bearing stratum is known as the Nihewan Formation of Early Pleistocene, while the upper one, carrying Limnocythere dubiosa Daday, L. binoda Huang and Candona neglecta Sars, is named as the Houtouliang Formation of middle Pleistocene, which may be corresponding to the middle Pleistocene interglacial fοrmation in the Qinghai Lake region of China and to the middle Pleistocene Holstein interglacial deposits in Europe. Below the Houtouliang Formation there lies the Qiaoergou Formation of early middle Pleistocene, a glacial marginal deposit, which may he correlated with the Dagu glacial deposit. The euryhalinous Cyprideis appeared to be derived from the early Tertiary of the Tarim Basin of China, or even possibly from that of Europe, then it spread eastward and reached to the Sanggan River Valley in Pleistocene.
