Remark Comb. Nov.
In view of the existence of Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing (1846a: 6; basionym Micraloa
aeruginosa Kützing, 1833a: 371, pl. VIII: fig. 23), it is not possible to transfer the oldest name for the
present species to Microcystis. Fortunately, there is an available nomenclatural synonym, Gloeocapsa
zanardinii. When Hauck (1877) transferred the present species to Gloeocapsa, he was obligated to change the epithet because of the existence of G. aeruginosa Kützing (1843b: 174). [details]
