Description Lens-shaped, anterio-posteriorly compressed, asymmetrical in ventral view. Thecal surface smooth, covered with evenly distributed fine pores. Apical pore plate oval containing fish-hook shaped pore. Asymmetric hatchet-shaped 2’ plate, triangular Po, broad, pentagonal 1p plate. [details]
Harmful effect G. polynesiensis is both maitotoxic and ciguatoxic, different strains producing slightly different amounts of the various toxins, being CTX-3C, -3B, -4A, -4B, , M-seco-CTX-3C, 2-OH-P-CTX3C (Chinain et al. 1999, 2010; Rhodes et al. 2014; Longo et al. 2019; Munday et al. 2017). It has also been shown to produce 44-methylgambierone and gambierone (Murray et al. 2019, 2021). [details]
