Members of the green algal genus Desmococcus Brand emend. Vischer (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae) are well-known from bark (as part of the "Pleurococcetum" association) and soil. This paper addresses several unanswered questions regarding the cytomorphology, development, reproduction and taxonomy of the species concerned based on observations of cultures. Special attention was paid to the light and electron microscopical (SEM and TEM) aspects of cytomorphology and the ultrastructure of verrucose aplanosporangia, the latter being important diacritical features. A new species from soil, Desmococcus spinocystis, is described.
