Introduction: "The City and County of San Francisco have recently supported baseline studies to determine possible sewage outfall sites in the Gulf of the Farallones, off San Francisco Bay. These studies have been conducted by the firm of Brown & Caldwell, Inc. and include water quality analysis, sediment analysis, fish surveys and benthic community structure, Polychaetes are a predominant invertebrate group in the benthic survey. Systematics have proven difficult, however, owing to a lack of previous collections in the area and a general prior neglect of taxonomic study on the northern California continental shelf. Since there have been few reports of California benthic polychaetes from the continental shelf north of Santa Barbara, materials from the Gulf of the Farallones are important. Although not all species have been examined, several species new to science have been found as well as several significant range extensions. These finds are included in the present paper. A more complete account of benthic community structure is in preparation.
