Etymology The specific epithet nigrescens is a Latin form meaning 'blackish', and refers to the dark coloration of the species. [details]

Type locality Philippine Islands. Grube (1878: VII) comments that probably Syllis nigrescens was collected in Singapore, but posteriorly in the same work (Grube, 1878: 125) it is said that the species was collected in Philippines. Wiktor (1980: 272) also gives the locality on the label of the holotype as being Philippines, which is also confirmed by Licher (1999: 269). [details]
