TaxonomySpongia pennatula Lamarck is a Caulospongia (see a.o. Topsent, 1932). Ridley misinterpreted Lamarck's species and assigned it to Carteriospongia (as Carterispongia). This was adopted by Lendenfeld (1889) and Bergquist (1980), both as Phyllospongia. For the time being we assign Ridley 's and Lendenfeld's specimens to Carteriospongia pennatula (sensu Ridley), but technically, this species needs a new name. [details]
