As the type species was removed from the clitellate genus Nais, one can speculate the formulation Naineris was intended to indicate an intermediate appearance between Nais and Nereis (respectively oligochaete and polychaete), but it is impossible to be certain. Other polychaetes wrongly placed in Nais were Opheliidae [details]Grammatical gender Feminine. Past authors treat the genus as feminine. If the second part of the name is based on Nereis, which is feminine, then this is logical.
