Taxonomy Dillwyn (1817:584) addressed this species as Buccinum dolium Variety A, as such distinguishing it from Buccinum dolium Variety B, currently accepted as Tonna allium (Dillwyn, 1817). (fide Vos, 2007 (44)) [details]
Taxonomy Lamarck (1822:260) referred to this species as Dolium maculatum whilst adding the name Dolium tessellatum to its synonymy rather than using that name for the separate species which he had named 6 years earlier and is currently accepted as Tonna tessellata (Lamarck, 1816). [details]
