Status The status of Eunereis Malmgren, 1865 is uncertain. However, currently it is in use and has not been synonymized. It was erected for Nereis longissima Johnston, 1840, known from a single epitoke specimen at the time, although perhaps there is a link to Myriana longissima Savigny, 1822 (q.v.). Both Johnston (1865) and Malmgren also included Heteronereis paradoxa Örsted, 1843 under Nereis longissima, although this is of little help in clarifying the attributes of N longissima.
Bakken et al (2022) and Wilson et al (2023:82) provide a diagnosis and description but note that "Eunereis includes species which in other respects, especially chaetal characters, are similar to either of the genera Neanthes or Nereis suggesting a review is necessary" The earlier review of Eunereis taxa by Hsueh (2018) shows how varied the species are which have been placed in it, but he has a wide concept of the genus, not restricted to species without maxillary paragnaths.
