Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, rarely entangled in small clusters, isopolar, coiled irregularly screw-like or more or less in regular and circular coils, which are 68–120 µm wide and 25–55 µm high (spirals 1.4–3.2:1), clearly constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated towards ends, sometimes with mucilaginous envelopes. Cells ± spherical, blue-green or yellowish, with numerous brownish aerotopes, 4–11 × (7) 8–11 µm; apical cells rounded, of the same size and shape as all other cells. Heterocytes spherical or rarely slightly oval, of the same width or slightly larger than vegetative cells, intercalary, solitary, (6.5) 9–12 (13) µm in diameter. Akinetes intercalary, distant from heterocytes, solitary or rarely two together, oval, rarely very slightly asymmetric or with widely conically narrowed ends, (12.5) 20–28 (42) × (9) 15–21 µm. – Loosening of coiling can be observed under culture conditions. Irregular coiling appears usually in poorly developed populations. Gas vesicles can disappear in some cells after long-term cultivation. Transient morphotypes to A. crassa occur in culture. [details]
Distribution In plankton of eutrophic waters (stagnant waters and large rivers), often forming heavy water blooms, locally common, rarely in monospecific populations. Considered cosmopolitan with exception of subpolar regions. Massive populations known mainly from central Europe, subtropical S America and SE Australia (specific identity should be confirmed).

Harmful effects and toxins Strains of this species isolated in culture were found to produce anatoxin-a according to Sivonen et al. 1989a. Microcystins according to Vezie et al. 1998. Saxitoxins according to Humpage et al. 1994; Negri et al. 1997; Testé et al. 2002; Pomati et al. 2006. [details]
