Etymology In creating Polyphasia Quatrefages is replacing genus name Eumenia Örsted, 1843, already used by Godart, 1824 in Lepidoptera (Quatrefages wrongly thought the name was from Risso). He states (translated) "I propose that of Polyphysia which indicates the multiple affinities of this interesting type." Polyphysia in Greek means something like 'multiple natures'. it is assumed to be feminine as Quatrefages continued with Örsted's feminine adjective for the new combination of Polyphysia crassa (Örsted, 1843) [details]
Grammatical gender Assumed to be feminine as Quatrefages continued with Örsted's feminine adjective for the new combination of Polyphysia crassa. Polyphysia quaterbranchiata Furreg, 1925 is given a feminine suffix. [details]
