Taxonomic remark Jeffry (1878) identified recent (living) brachiopod material from the eastern Atlantic as being conspecific with Philippi's (1844) extinct Pliocene species Terebratula sphenoidea. This species was later put under the name Stenosarina sphenoidea, though the conflation of both living and fossil specimens was pointed out as erroneous by several later authors who requested a new name for the living specimens. Davidson (1998) created the species name S. davidsoni to avoid further confusion between the extant and Pliocene species. [details]
