Synonymy Despite the apparent unique single first elytron of Polynoe tessellata, leading to the creation of genus Monocolea, Claparède (1868: 66 (alternate 376)) soon synonymized Polynoe tessellata Costa with Polynoe lunulata (now Malmgrenia). He wrote [in translation] "In spite of a great resemblance of appearance, P. tessellata is supposed to be distinguished from all the other Polynoæ by a very singular character, on which M. Ach. Costa based the genus Monocolea. There must indeed exist in this worm a single elytra anterior, resulting from the welding of two. Such an implausible conformation would have deserved special study. Unfortunately Mr Costa does not tell us much about this important point. From where is born in particular the elytrophore of this unique elytra? This would be the first object to elucidate, but the author leaves it out. I can not help but believe a mistake The brown edge of the two anterior elytra of P. lunulata gives this first pair of elytra the appearance of a semilunar disk, reminiscent of the thoracic shield of a Casside [beetle] for example. Would not Mr. Costa have been deceived by this appearance?" [details]
Taxonomy On page 84 Costa effectively creates new genus Monocolea Costa for this species, but does not use the two in combination until 1867 [details]
Type locality Gulf of Naples, Italy. ["It is found in the Gulf of Naples in the same conditions as the other Polinoè, that is near the roots of algae; it is not however frequent. We have had three individuals, of whom one more large in perfect integrity."] [details]
