Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet mimus is a Latin noun of Greek origin meaning 'mime' or 'imitator', and may refer to the similarity of the species with Spio filicornis (Müller, 1776), with which the species is compared: "This species resembles S. filicornis (O. F. Müller). It differs in the character of parapodia and branchiae. in the posterior region, the great reduction of the branchiae and the elongate, cirriform or subcirriform character of the lamellae, etc. Contrasting conspicuously with the condition in filicornis, in which the branchiae remain long and the lamellae are not thus modified. The crochets first appear farther caudad than in filicornis, etc." (Chamberlin, 1920: 16B). [details]
Habitat Pelagic under 5 inches (13 cm) of ice over 1 foot (0.3 m) of water. [details]
Taxonomy Current taxon junior synonym of species listed. Frank et al. (1985: 40) resumed the systematic history of the species as follows: "Hartman (1959) refers this species to S. filicornis (Müller, 1776), and Holmquist (1967, p. 305-306) suggests it may be a synonym of Microspio theeli Soderstrom, 1920 but Dr. N. Maciolek (personal communication) considers this to be an error and regards S. mimus as a valid species." In fact, Hartman referred the species to S. filicornis for the first time in 1938 (Hartman, 1938: 13), and sustained it again in 1948 (Hartman, 1948: 36) and 1959 (Hartman, 1959: 390), while Maciolek (1990: 1113, table 1) accepted later the synonymy proposed by Holmquist, after examining the type.
