Montenegro is situated in the southeastern part of the Adriatic Sea, and its coastline is divided into two distinct areas: Boka Kotorska Bay and the open water coastline. Numerous studies on benthic communities have been conducted in this region, yet few have specifically focused on sponges. This paper aims to compile data from scientific literature, technical reports, and unpublished observations in order to create a checklist and a distribution map of marine sponges along the Montenegrin Adriatic coast. Field surveys were conducted at 94 sites along the coast, utilizing photodocumentation as a minimally invasive method for in-situ data collection. This study recorded 87 sponge species, the great majority of which belonged to the class Demospongiae. Twelve species were reported for the first time for the study area, and 14 species are protected under various laws. The highest number of sponge species was found in the inner part of Boka Kotorska Bay, particularly at two sites that had been the subject of numerous studies in the past. A significant number of sponges were found in other parts of the Montenegrin coast, including the Marine Protected Areas Platamuni, Katic, and Stari Ulcinj, as well as Luštica and Volujica peninsulas, and the Island of St. Nikola. These results emphasize Montenegro’s rich marine biodiversity and the need for continued research, especially in coralligenous habitats and marine caves, to further uncover sponge diversity.
