Taxonomy This species, although claimed as a new species by Carter, is in fact a junior synonym of Spheciospongia vagabunda var. trincomaliensis (Ridley, 1884 as Spirastrella in a footnote on p. 468). In turn, Ridley based his new variety on Carter's (1882: 352) Suberites ? sp. At a later date, Carter (1887) partly accepted Ridley's name by erecting Suberites trincomaliensis for this same material from Sri Lanka, claiming it -incorrectly-as his own. [details]
