The ultrastructures of histological patterns and cell junctions in the oscula of Hippospon- gia com'lllttnis, Lamarck, 1816 Euspongia officinalis Linne, 1759, Haliclona. ·I'osea· O. Schmidt, 1870 and Ve'l'ongia cavel'nicola Vacelet, 1959 are described with a view to eluci- dating mechanisms of intercellular communication in sponges. Five main classes of cells were found: exo- and endopinacocytes, archaeocytes, spheriferous cells and contractile cells. Junctions do occur between all the cell types but the majority of junctions involve superficial pinacocytes and deep contractile cells. The oscula are constructed according to simple 01' complex patterns but all possess two epithelial layers enclosing, and connec- ted with, an intermediate network. Intercellular connections involve the basic apposition of plasma membranes, where desmosonle-like and nexus-like junctions can be observed. Evidence of exchanges or transfer of material from cell to cell is illustrated. Sponges clearly possess the ability to circulate substances or signals between cells, not only by the undirected spreading in extracellular spaces (the internaI milieu), but also by means of directional transmission along circuits of connected cells.
