A review of the literature reveals that data on sponge spicule complements have not been exploited to the full for taxonomic purposes. The reasons for this lack of exploitation are dis:cu:ssecl arrd it is concluded that more whole-hearted acceptance of the concept of
sponge as mixed populations of cells and cell-products permits logical development of no'\vel'fnl taxometric procedures. The logic of one such procedure, which involves the Kc,lmogIJrov-iSm,irlllov test, and which has been programmed for electronic computation,
is demonstrated with data from foul' populations of Ophlitaspongia seriata. The procedure not only discriminates between populations which might be expected, from their spatial and ecological distinctions, to differ morphologically, but also isolates key characters together with their powers of discrimination.
