Proceedings of the 6th International Sponge Conference
A three years lasting experiment on growth and behaviour of Chondrilla nucula is described. About 100 sponge fragments were transplanted in plastic tubes, in a sponge farming structure. All fragments showed the tendency to grow “climbing” on the internal vertical surface of tubes. Sponges moved 10 cm upward in a period of four months. Mortality was lower than 10 %: Sponge biomass proliferation was up to 800 % over a three years period.
